Mahalia Essentials

Mahalia Burkmar had to grow as an artist in the full glare of the world. Handed a record deal (and a career-making Ed Sheeran co-sign) at 14, this Leicester-born singer experimented with hushed acoustic pop, jazz-inflected retro-soul and even occasional Arctic Monkeys covers before, with the narcotic Erykah Baduist swing of “Sober”, settling on something like her destined final form. It’s a 10,000 hours-like odyssey that was worth the wait; something that has only added richness and confidence to the output clustered around debut record Love and Compromise. In practice, this means sultry summer jams (club-destroying Burna Boy link-up “Simmer”), piano-driven golden age R&B (“Square 1”) and on “BRB”—part of the Isolation Tapes EP dropped as a recent gift to confined fans—a lovestruck modern lullaby that lands like a warm, life-giving shaft of morning sunlight.
