Parisian sextet L’Impératrice get smooth and funky in their compelling nu-disco soul-pop. Yet while the tunes themselves are upbeat and sanguine, they’re packed with plenty of nuance. As much as the deep basslines and groovy beats offer a restless energy perfect for the dance floor, there’s also a lot to contemplate on emotional and philosophical levels. Much of that due to singer Flore Benguigui’s bittersweet voice, which manages to sound simultaneously melancholy and carefree. The results may be confounding at first, but it makes for a wonderful, bracing paradox.
