Singing was always in Hariharan's blood—both of his parents were Carnatic vocalists—but this singular artist took his craft to another level. In his early days, Hariharan would put in up to 13 hours a day in classical vocal training, refining his tone and honing his multi-octave range. The late music director Jaidev signed him for the soundtrack to the 1978 film Gaman. But it was his moving performance of “Tu Hi Re”, for A. R. Rahman's smash soundtrack to Mani Ratnam's Bombay, that this gifted vocalist shot into India's musical stratosphere. Now, he's here to stay.
