At Home With Maynard James Keenan: The Playlist

Maynard James Keenan is keeping an optimistic outlook during self-isolation at home. “Whatever you're doing, you can do it better if you just pay more attention,” says the TOOL co-founder and vocalist, who also writes, sings and performs for the rock bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. “Help your friends, help your neighbours, help your family to just be present through all of this. Don't check out through all this—be present in it.” During this time, Keenan was going to be on the road supporting TOOL’s 2019’s release Fear Inoculum while gearing up for harvest for the winery he runs in Jerome, Arizona. Instead, he’s happy at his Arizona home taking care of his daughter and appreciating all the fruits he’s planted. As he and his Puscifer bandmates return with the brand-new track “Apocalyptical”, Keenan curated an exclusive Apple Music playlist of songs keeping him inspired on lockdown, featuring tracks by Autolux, Gillian Welch, Ahmad Jamal and Blonde Redhead, whose music he always plays during wine harvest season: “Their music goes around almost like an uncontrollable emotional spiral, but it lands where it's supposed to land and punches where it's supposed to punch to keep you grounded—there’s an anchor in it.”
