Essential Albums
- For their seventh album, Tegan and Sara put down their guitars and made a consummate shift to stratospheric synth-pop. It unites the sisters' once-disparate songwriting sensibilities to massive effect: “Closer” and “Drove Me Wild” are dizzyingly euphoric, yet the populist shift doesn’t sacrifice their emotional complexity. “I Was a Fool” is a gorgeous piano ballad, “Shock to Your System” a dystopian girl-group number, and on “I'm Not Your Hero”, Sara sings candidly about the difficulty of being a queer role model. Deep yet danceable, Heartthrob is one of the finest pop records of the '10s.

About Tegan and Sara
Based out of Vancouver, British Columbia, Tegan and Sara is an award-winning indie-pop band composed of identical twin sisters. ∙ They released their 1999 debut, Under Feet Like Ours, as Sara and Tegan, but they soon swapped the order of their names to avoid being thought of as a solo artist called Sara Antegan. ∙ Their 2012 Gold-certified single “Closer” spent 18 weeks on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart, peaking at No. 1. ∙ Get Along, composed of two short documentaries and a live concert film, was nominated for Best Long Form Video at the 2013 Grammy Awards. ∙ In 2013, Heartthrob entered the Billboard 200 at No. 3—their highest ranking to date—and topped the Top Rock Albums chart. ∙ Produced by Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, “Everything Is AWESOME!!!” was the closing theme from 2014’s The Lego Movie and became their first Platinum-certified single. ∙ At the 2014 Juno Awards (the Canadian Grammys), the duo won Group of the Year, Pop Album of the Year (Heartthrob), and Single of the Year (“Closer”).
