Warne Marsh Essentials

A strong influence on tenor sax titans like Wayne Shorter and Mark Turner, Warne Marsh's rhythmically and harmonically innovative improvisations remain vital today. Alongside frequent collaborator Lee Konitz, Marsh studied theory with legendary pianist and educator Lennie Tristano in the '50s and shared the frontline in his sextet. Marsh continued developing and refining his own improvisational method as a leader, working alongside venerated peers such as Hank Jones, Red Mitchell and Kenny Drew. Marsh died on stage at Los Angeles club Donte's in 1987.
