King Tubby learned his craft as an audio engineer based in Kingston. That's why you can hear traces of his signature psychedelic dub sound in, say, the way Toots Hibbert's low, soulful voice plays against the hypnotic bass of "54-46 That's My Number". But Tubby's taste transcended borders. His use of atmosphere and hi-hats was preceded by Dave Brubeck's "Take Five", a song he later remixed.
