Johnny Thunders Essentials

In the New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders played the pawn-shop Keith to David Johansen's thrift-store Jagger. With his post-Dolls outfit the Heartbreakers, he ventured deeper down the back alley, taking glam-spiked rock ‘n' roll into seedier places en route to punk's mid-'70s uprising. “Born to Lose” barrels forth with a distinctly Dolls-like brio, but the equally raucous “Chinese Rocks” provides a grim glimpse into Thunders' infamous junkie lifestyle. That pathos would turn even more palpable with 1978's “You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory”, the bruised-vein ballad that would become Thunders' eternal epitaph after his 1991 death.
