Founded in 1997 by guitarist Sammy Duet after the breakup of Acid Bath, this New Orleans quartet uprooted Black Metal from its Scandinavian roots and replanted it in the rich soil of the American South. Though Goatwhore took its early cues from the caustic assaults of Celtic Frost and Bathory, the songs on this playlist often return to the unpretentious assault of pure rock ‘n' roll. They recapture the unhinged velocity of Motorhead and early Judas Priest, while their lyrics dispense with the theatricality of pagan myths in favor of the real-world ravages of Hurricane Katrina.
