As a Latin jazz visionary, this saxophonist and bandleader was responsible for galvanising compositions that drew from a bevy of styles (including fusion and free jazz), as well as the propulsive score to Last Tango in Paris. Barbieri also served in bands led by Ornette Coleman trumpeter Don Cherry. In this mix, you'll hear his approach to American jazz standards and his own pathbreaking pieces; his lyricism is in evidence throughout. And listen for touches of the experimentation Barbieri flashed on Live at the Cafe Montmartre 1966, which resurfaced in subsequent projects.
