Dr. Feelgood Essentials

Dr. Feelgood took early-‘60s R&B and stripped it back to its bare essentials: Wilko Johnson’s choppy guitar, Lee Brilleaux’s howling snarl, and a sense of total propulsion. They mixed old blues standards with their own 12-bar bruisers and dressed like small-town hoods while their peers glammed up, and in the process created a mythology of feral, low-rent Essex blues around their native Canvey Island. The band’s merciless power drove them through the pubs of mid-’70s London like gangsters on a raid, leaving future punks and New Wavers dazzled in their wake.
