If there's a heaven, it probably sounds like Cocteau Twins. Despite their post-punk roots—which you can hear in the scraping drones and drum-machine thud of early-'80s songs like “Wax and Wane”—the UK band soon gravitated towards light and colour. Elizabeth Fraser's ethereal coo is often a language all its own (see “Oomingmak”), mirroring the band's glistening guitars and otherworldly effects. On later songs (“Heaven or Las Vegas”, “Blue Bell Knoll”), their melodies became clearer and their pop instincts came to the fore, bringing a glimpse of the divine into sharper focus.
