At Home With Leon Bridges

“The way I curated this playlist, these songs just mark different parts of my journey in life,” Leon Bridges says about his exclusive At Home With Apple Music playlist. “Before I pursued music, I pursued dance to where I was studying ballet, jazz and modern dance—and I was always on the hunt for eclectic music to choreograph to.” As the soul and R&B singer-songwriter prepares for the release of his third album, Gold-Diggers Sound, Bridges takes you through different periods of his life and career with a timeless mixture of modern R&B trailblazers (Frank Ocean, Lianne La Havas), classic trip-hop (Portishead) and artists based in his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas (Townes Van Zandt, Abraham Alexander). Check out some of his picks below. Townes Van Zandt, “Kathleen” “Townes is my guy. He was instrumental in the inception of, I would say, the Americana folky thing. And he’s a Fort Worth guy. So I can say that I'm a speck amongst that lineage of artists to have made it out of Fort Worth. And just on a songwriting tip, Townes is someone that really inspires me in that way. Just the way he's able to convey a story and paint a picture is something I try to emulate in my music.” Lianne La Havas, “Paper Thin” “Lianne is someone that I discovered via this takeaway soul concept called Black Cab Session. I saw her and was totally enamoured. She’s a beautiful, beautiful soul.” Portishead, “Roads” “I can describe how I felt about them initially. There was a time in my life where I was listening to underground, boom-bap and hip-hop for a minute. And when I discovered this whole trip-hop thing, I just was blown away, hearing those boom-bap beats with this.”
