The avant-tenor saxophonist (and occasional pianist) improvises alongside bassist William Parker and percussionist Hamid Drake in this set from Berlin. While the group can channel the power of late-'60s avant-jazz, they also listen to one another with sensitivity. Opener “Fearless” begins and ends with high-intensity theatrics; in between, Gayle shows off some bluesy exclamations, while the rhythm section creates rollicking grooves. Gayle takes to the ivories during “Gospel”, “Texturen” and “Angels” (sounding influenced by Monk and Ra), and his sax reappears on the set’s “Encore", which ends with some light-touch swing—another well-executed hairpin turn.
