San Francisco slowcore pioneer Mark Eitzel’s 14th solo album is a focused and penetrating affair; his lyricism pulls together dark humour (“I Love You But You’re Dead”) and melodies so smooth they border on jazz (“All My Love”). Tracks like “Why Are You with Me” are lovably self-deprecating but, overall, the album’s misty calls for love and affection (“Oh Mercy”) and velvety streams of strings and guitar (“Nowhere to Run”) showcase Eitzel’s talent for weaving vibes so potent that his lyrics and music become inseparable.
