Formed by Andrew Eldritch in 1977, Sisters of Mercy were one of the leading lights of the goth rock movement in the '80s (though the band itself was never comfortable with that classification). Initially a guitar-based act (as evidenced on their debut album First and Last and Always in 1985), The Sisters of Mercy moved toward a more atmospheric, sweepingly grandiose sound, using electronic drums and keyboards more. As time went on, the lineup changed and ex-members of the band went on to form their own similar (and successful) bands, The Mission and Ghost Dance.
