The Linda Lindas: Bravery

While it wouldn’t be wholly accurate to say The Linda Lindas make protest music, there’s plenty of resistance and punk-rock attitude in their songs. And in the middle of last year’s wave of anti-Asian attacks, the Los Angeles foursome—whose members range in age between 11 and 17 years old and are Asian American and Latinx—released “Racist, Sexist Boy”, a sludgy F-U with high-road resolve (“We rebuild what you destroy,” they sing). In their exclusive playlist curated for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the group shine a light on a few of their favourite AAPI rockers, including SASAMI, Kicking Giant, Alley Cats and Goh Nakamura. Japanese Breakfast’s “Boyish” is a must-listen, Lucia de la Garza says. “We met her at Head in the Clouds fest in Pasadena,” she says. “She’s everywhere and I highly recommend her book Crying in H Mart.” One of Bela Salazar’s favourites is the 1995 cut “Hand in Your Head” by Money Mark, who is also Asian American and Latinx. “He introduced our music to Kathleen Hanna, who he met through being in the Beastie Boys,” she says. “How cool is that?” Even as tweens and teens, the group seem acutely aware of the value of representation. “We came out of a local scene,” Lucia says, “but we are proud to be a part of something much bigger.”
