Selects: Jlin

Ever since Chicago footwork landed on international radars in the 2000s, it’s been one of the dance music world’s most abstract forms. But Gary, Indiana, producer Jerrilynn Patton (aka Jlin) takes that level of abstraction to new heights: Few artists have added so much complexity to the genre while at the same time taking so much away, reducing and reprogramming its tumbling kicks, toms, hats and snares to such a degree that, well, it’s practically not footwork at all anymore. (Which is hardly surprising, if her list of collaborators—William Basinski, Holly Herndon and the late SOPHIE among them—is any indication.) The tracks that make up this set of Selects "are my everyday anthems”, Jlin tells Apple Music. “They change constantly, but the ones I chose are definitely my go-to. I love them all differently. Each tells a part of my day-to-day story in my life's journey.” It’s an incredibly wide-ranging collection, whether showcasing Al Jarreau’s cover of “My Favorite Things”; hip-hop from Kendrick, Outkast and Lupe Fiasco; or fellow experimental stalwarts Herndon, DJ Elmoe and DJ T-RELL.
