RL Grime Essentials

RL Grime thrives on friction. Back in the early 2010s, when genres were more compartmentalised, the Los Angeles native got his start by colliding EDM with rap and watching the sparks fly. His 2014 debut album, VOID, helped establish the sound of trap-rave on tracks like “Core”, a song seemingly powered by rocket fuel, and “Kingpin”, a slow-motion explosion of synths in which a bellowing Big Sean lights the fuse. On 2018’s NOVA, he turned to guests like Miguel (“Light Me Up”) and Ty Dolla $ign (“Take It Away”) to add a heavy dose of armour-plated R&B to his maximalist vision. And where some artists mellow over time, RL Grime just seems to keep getting more intense: His 2021 Baauer collab “Fallaway” is a drum ’n’ bass anthem in the shape of a runaway freight train.
