L.A.X Essentials

Through his engaging sounds, Nigerian artist L.A.X—born Damilola Afolabi—has crafted himself a lane by serving up a combination of upbeat records and catchy love songs. Since his musical beginnings as part of the rap trio Flyboiz, he's gone on to expand his repertoire as a triple-threat rapper, singer and songwriter. Coming a long way from his breakout appearance on Wizkid's "Caro", which won him Diaspora Artist of the Year at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, he's firmly established himself as a successful solo act. With a mixture of party rhythms and romantic melodies, L.A.X's catalogue colours interpersonal experiences as well as nights on the dance floor. With a fusion of Afropop, fuji, Afrobeats and dance serving as his foundation, he comfortably explores different moods, themes and situations. Referencing cross-regional styles and trends, the tropical rhythms of "Slow Whine" and "Give You Love" coalesce with the Afrohouse of "Gwara Gwara" while the amapiano inflections of "Go Low" and "Faster" display how L.A.X continues to expand his sonic horizons. Coupling his own adventurous impulses with collaborations with the likes of Moelogo, Simi, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Peruzzi, Mr Eazi, Tekno and Ycee, this is an artist who fully embodies diversity.
