Låpsley’s ethereal electronic pop songs of lost hope are stark and sparse, with all decoration boiled down to bare essentials to frame the despair in her voice. Having been introduced to the harmonic possibilities of classical music while growing up in Stockport—the result of early training on oboe, piano and guitar—she created a vulnerable sound from minimal electronic instrumentation and pleading pop melodies. Her home-recorded debut EP was an internet sensation, quickly gathering a million listens in 2014 (and fans including a young Billie Eilish), followed by her breakthrough hit single “Hurt Me” a year later.
