Duality is at the heart of Kekra's work. He was born in France, but is reverential of his Moroccan heritage, and often peppers his predominantly French rapping with Arabic. His sound, meanwhile, is an acerbic conflict between the 808 beats and ratatat vocals of modern trap, and the murky beats and droning intonation of old school hip hop. These dichotomies are best illustrated in the autotuned raps battling it out with trundling bass on “Viceland,” in the UK garage-evoking “9 Milli”, and the titanically ominous “BooskaKekra,” whose razored synth is kind of a 2016 take on the Jaws theme.
