A respected member of hip-hop crew Beginner, rapper, songsmith and producer Jan Eißfeldt adopted a different moniker—and a more adventurous music identity—when he re-emerged as Jan Delay. His debut solo LP, 2001’s Searching for the Jan Soul Rebels, veers into horn-fuelled, bass-steeped dub and reggae—and is dotted with rhythmic rants about things that rub him the wrong way. Despite his recurring musical obsessions, Delay remains a thriving, bold-as-brass creative on a mission to challenge the stylistic status quo, whether with potent rock riffs or vibrant funk grooves.
