House music's very own Jekyll and Hyde, Chicago's Curtis Jones established Green Velvet in the early '90s as the unhinged counterpart to his more soulful alias, Cajmere. Favouring jacking drums, crude keyboards and hair-raising voiceovers, Green Velvet's techno-edged sound—influenced equally by Prince and industrial music—helped him cross over to European clubs and raves. At home, his labels Relief and Cajual gave a platform to a new generation of producers like DJ Sneak and Gene Farris, who would push house into the 21st century. Jones continues to release hits and play around the world.
