Frank Zappa: Influences

Zappa's tastes cut across high art and pop. While modern classical music mentored him in avant-garde weirdness, The Five Satins' doo-wop ballad “In the Still of the Night” tutored him in nonsensical vocal play. Guitar Slim's bluesy “The Things That I Used to Do” got him into fuzzy distortion and R&B swing, while Mahavishnu Orchestra's fret-screaming “Meeting of the Spirits” inspired his embrace of jam-heavy fusion.
