About Pee Wee Russell
Clarinetist (and occasional tenor saxophonist) Pee Wee Russell had an idiomatic and homespun approach to his playing that had some in his lifetime contending that he couldn't really play. However, his tremeloed pitch and occasionally odd sense of line found appreciation from fellow musicians, from Bix Beiderbecke in the '20s through to Thelonious Monk in the '60s. Retrospect has brought greater appreciation for the beauty of his highly personal approach.
