About Miss Toni Fisher

b. c. 1929, Los Angeles, California, USA, d. February 1999. Miss Toni Fisher is best remembered for her one US Top 10 hit, ‘The Big Hurt’, which reached number 3 in November 1959, but little is known of her background. She was a torch singer who recorded the Wayne Shanklin-penned hit for the small Signet label, backed by Heine Beau And His Orchestra. The single featured a ‘phasing’ effect that would become popular on psychedelic recordings nearly a decade later, and Fisher’s album, named after the hit single, was notable in that it was an early stereo recording. Fisher had two more chart singles, a remake of Irving Berlin’s ‘How Deep Is The Ocean’, and ‘West Of The Wall’, the latter a reference to the Berlin Wall, a newsworthy topic when the song was issued in 1962, on Big Top Records. Fisher went on to record for Columbia Records, Capitol Records and Smash Records in the 60s and then disappeared from the music scene.
