About Birthe Kjær

Birthe Kjaer is a Danish pop singer whose career spans several decades and includes numerous Top Ten albums and hit singles. Throughout the 1980s she regularly competed in the annual Eurovision Song Contest and was chosen to represent her country in 1989 with the song "Vi Maler Byen Rød." Born on September 1, 1948, in Aarhus, Denmark, she made her recording debut in 1968 with "Arriverderci Franz," a chart-topping hit single that established her as a pop star. Subsequent hits include "Sommer og Sol," "Tennessee Waltz," and "Av Min Arm." She worked with producers including Helmer Olesen, Søren Bundgaard, Keld Heick, and Ivan Pedersen. Aside from her steady stream of album releases, Kjaer competed in the Eurovision Song Contest throughout the 1980s. In addition to representing Denmark at Eurovision in 1989 with "Vi Maler Byen Rød," she also competed to represent the country in the years 1980, 1986, 1987, and 1991. She hosted the Danish competition in 1990. After the turn of the century, Kjaer remained active and released albums including Laenge Leve Livet (2001), På en Fransk Altan (2003), 6 Originale Albums fra 1969-1977 (2005), Lys i Mørket (2006), Let It Snow (2007), and Gennem 40 År (2008), all of which reached the Top 30 of the Danish albums chart, if not the Top Ten. ~ Jason Birchmeier
