iTunes Festival: London 2012 - EP

Singer/songwriter José James performed his London iTunes Festival set on the birthday of both John Coltrane and Ray Charles, and the timing was perfectly symbolic. Like Coltrane, he’s performed with pianist McCoy Tyner. Like Charles, he’s shown a penchant for expanding and blending genres. “I’m All Over Your Body” is buoyed by cool accompaniment from trumpeter Takuya Kuroda, trombonist Alistair White, and pianist/keyboardist Kris Bowers on Fender Rhodes. Bass guitar legend Pino Palladino (The Who, D’Angelo, John Mayer Trio) guests on that song and “Sword + Gun,” which was cowritten by Moroccan vocal artist Hindi Zahra and is propelled by 16th-note handclaps. James’ own single “Trouble” channels vintage ‘70s soul, acknowledged by a brief interpolation of Al Green’s “Love and Happiness.” The then-new “Come to My Door” shines through with vocal harmonies by bass guitarist Solomon Dorsey and clean shuffles by drummer Richard Spaven.
