For Good Reasons

For Good Reasons

In the three years following the release of his critically acclaimed 2019 mixtape dnt’dlt, AYLØ’s work has only grown more microscopic in scope, settling on the befuddling nature of life, romance and self as the raison d'être for his work while paying homage to the genre agnosticism that helped propel West Africa’s alté scene to global fame. The hazy Clairsentience from 2020 was a delightful cocktail of trip-hop and acid jazz that signalled to the languid harmonies of 2017’s Insert Project Name, while “Saudade”, a stirring collaboration with Ronehi, brings nostalgic longing to life immaculately over muted drums and stirring piano riffs. On For Good Reasons, AYLØ reflects on trials and triumphs with a pervading sense of casual acceptance, layering specific anecdotes about friendship, love, betrayal and loss into his most expansive work yet. The 10-track project bears the mark of its creator’s immersive melodies, impeccable songwriting and edgy vocals, but there are influences from the shuffling rhythms of blues music (“Tekkers”) and the ominous hi-hats of drill music (“James Bond”). When a tender appreciation of life and friends is uttered near the end of “90 for the Rims”, the true face of For Good Reasons is revealed: This is a collection of songs about staying true at all times because everything happens for good reasons.
