Ukrainian Composers

For centuries, folk songs were a major part of traditional Ukrainian music. That changed in the 18th century, when composers Dmitry Bortniansky and Maksym Berezovsky developed a sacred choral tradition. Later, a more secular style emerged among composers such as Mykola Lysenko, Nikolai Kapustin and perhaps Ukraine’s most famous living composer, Valentyn Silvestrov.
