For a band who cut their teeth on bluesy rock ‘n' roll, The Tragically Hip have a remarkably nuanced set of sounds in their arsenal. On early cut “The Last of the Unplucked Gems”, frontman Gord Downie delivers his poetic lyrics over sparkling guitar lines, and the punchy, skewed alt-pop of “What Blue” shows the band exploring modern sounds. “Thompson Girl” even places them in the realm of ominous folk rock with a tale of the frigid north.
