Tanya Tagaq Essentials

Capable of astonishing dexterity, force and fury, Tanya Tagaq's voice is like nothing else in modern music. Born in Nunavut in 1975, Tagaq was in school in Yellowknife, Canada, when she first began practising the Inuit vocal style known as throat singing. Lacking the partner that throat singing typically requires, Tagaq developed a startling and very personal solo variation, one she has since applied to musical settings that continually shift from spare and intimate to dense and ferocious. Often teaming with such collaborators as Björk and Mike Patton while integrating aspects of Inuit musical traditions with avant-garde rock, dance and experimental sounds, Tagaq pursues her many directions with a boldness and intelligence that's matched by her lyrics' fierce and fearless take on issues facing Indigenous people worldwide.
