Geordie DJ Riton, born Henry Smithson, came up in the clubs of Newcastle in the 2000s, cheekily mixing club beats with rock, pop and hip-hop. His signature is a squirrelly touch—wriggly basslines and saucily swung drums—combined with playful, infectious hooks. In 2009’s “Who’s There?”, dizzy synths propel playground-chant vocals; 2019’s “Turn Me On”, with house producer Oliver Heldens, flips a Yaz sample into retro-futurist freestyle. Riton has a stellar ear for fresh voices, too, churning out a growing body of irresistibly bouncy tunes built around the singsong delivery of Nigerian singers Kah-Lo, Mr Eazi and Davido.
