Pride: Electric Fields

Pride: Electric Fields

“This is a good-times soundtrack to our fight for freedom,” Electric Fields’ Michael Ross tells Apple Music. “It’s been a rocky road, but we have much to celebrate while still driving forward. Let your hand surf the wind as we take the scenic route.” Don’t hit the shuffle button on this Pride playlist. The First Nations electronic duo—keyboardist Ross and singer Zaachariaha Fielding, whose lyrics stretch across Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara and English—haven’t only thought carefully about the songs, but order of them, too. “The idea is queer giants that came before partnering with future change-makers as a unified family of distinct individuals,” Ross says. Look out for Lady Gaga following Queen’s “Radio Ga Ga”—the song behind the pop icon’s name. And the final track, Sylvester's “You Make Me Feel”, follows Electric Fields’ own “Gold Energy”, a nod to how both Sylvester and Fielding are gender-diverse people of colour. Listen on the way to your next Pride party, or simply when you’re hitting the road—and read on to discover more about key songs. Groove Armada, “If Everybody Looked the Same” Ross: “This track says it simple and clear: Diversity is just heaps more fun.” Ultra Naté, “Free” Fielding: “We all deserve to fulfil what Mother Nature made us to be, so freedom is a recurring theme with this track as well as ‘Everybody’s Free’ by Rozalla later on.” Lil Nas X, “THATS WHAT I WANT” Fielding: “Our community has fought so many battles just to express and engage in our love, so this track—along with others by La Bouche, Lady Gaga, Belinda Carlisle and Whitney Houston—speaks to our natural human need for love and connection.” Pet Shop Boys, “Absolutely Fabulous” Ross: “Our queer family has so much charisma, we just can’t help but be unapologetically resplendent. To capture this, here’s one of the most camp tracks ever.”
