P.O.D. Essentials

The merger of nu-metal and Christian rock wouldn't exist if it weren't for P.O.D. The California act skillfully contrast chunky, energetic jams with the soul-scouring lyrics of singer/rapper Sonny Sandoval. Early anthems like 2001's “Youth of the Nation” lean heavily on hip-hop syncopation and some darkly hued guitar textures. “Satellite” is similar in design, while also boasting a big, soaring hard-rock chorus. A touching ballad from 2012's Murdered Love, “Beautiful” shows off the group's graceful turn toward reggae-inspired rhythms and alt-rock melodicism.
