Michel Legrand Essentials

Prolific composer of film and television Michel Legrand wrote some of the most memorable melodies of French popular music, fusing jazz, pop and classical styles. The Legrand sound is rich with lush strings and jazz rhythms, as in Summer of ‘42 and the gorgeous harpsichord and orchestral lament of The Thomas Crown Affair. His haunting scores, like the sumptuous “Générique” from the Deneuve classic The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, have become classical gems, while some of his ballads, such as “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?” have since become jazz standards.
