Like his fellow resident DJs at Berlin's Berghain club, Marcel Fengler likes it dark, deep and a little bit dangerous. Since the late '00s, he has made his name with rolling, hypnotic techno marked by thundering beats and shadowy atmospheres. What distinguishes Fengler from his peers is his lightness of touch: the German producer has a way with nimble rhythms that snake around 4/4 kicks, and his synth programming is full of rich, microscopic details inspired by '90s ambient and IDM. The result is a kind of electronic body music that works just as well on the couch or commute as in the club.
