Jim O'Rourke Essentials

Jim O’Rourke’s range is vast: It spans indie rock, tape music and noise, and his contributions invariably stand among each genre’s best work. In ’90s avant-garde duo Gastr Del Sol (with David Grubbs), he pioneered knotty fusions of guitar, abstract lyrics and psychedelic collage. In the early 2000s, he joined Sonic Youth, steering their output toward the outer reaches. He’s best known for warm, radiant solo releases like 1999’s Eureka, combining acoustic fingerpicking with soft rock and ambient sound-sculpting. Yet on experimental records like 1992’s Disengage he’s turned out some of the chilliest frequencies in the history of drone music.
