Japan Essentials

Starting out as a glam-rock band in 1974, success eluded Japan until they worked with disco king Giorgio Moroder on their "Life in Tokyo" single in 1979, which transformed their sound into a cool fusion of arty post-punk, synth-pop and subtle Eastern influences. This rework, and frontman David Sylvian's distinctive image and rich, languid voice pushed the Londoners to the forefront of the nascent new romantic scene. Japan scored commercial and critical success in the early ‘80s, scoring nine hit singles and six hit albums before disbanding in 1983.
