Gretchen Parlato Essentials

Gretchen Parlato Essentials

Since emerging on the New York City music scene in the mid-2000s, Gretchen Parlato has embodied a new strain of jazz singing, one closely aligned with the R&B explorations of keyboardist Robert Glasper, with whom she's worked. Yet for every slinky phrasing of contemporary soul music, she's just as likely to tap into rhythmically elastic sounds from Brazil. As a vocalist, Parlato prefers insinuation to declaration, rarely raising her voice above a coo. When she tackles jazz standards, she slyly remakes them, clinging to the lithe grooves her bands produce and uncovering new meaning in the curves and elongations of every note.
