Risto Joost is a prominent figure among the younger generation of Estonian conductors. He has appeared widely with orchestras around the Baltic countries and beyond, and he is noted for his work in technically challenging contemporary music. In 2020, he became the music director and chief conductor at the Vanemuine Theatre in Tartu, Estonia. He has made several recordings of music by composers Arvo Pärt and Tõnu Kõrvits but has also conducted Western European music, such as Gounod's Requiem. He released a recording of Kõrvits' The Sound of Wings in 2023. By that time, his recording catalog comprised more than 20 items.
