Though Pilgrim hail from the tiny state of Rhode Island, it would be easy to mistake the band as a lost act from another era. With a stark, glacial sound that harks back to the heavy sonic mysticism of doom pioneers like Witchfinder General and Candlemass, the band mines the monolithic simplicity of classic doom, focusing on big riffs, high volume, and slow tempos. Originally starting out as a trio, the mysteriously named band -- made up of guitarist and vocalist the Wizard, bassist Count Elric the Soothsayer, and drummer Krolg Splinterfist, Slayer of Man -- first made its dark presence known in 2012 with Misery Wizard. Though Elric would part ways with the band, Pilgrim continued on as a duo, making a triumphant return on 2014's shuddering riff-fest II: Void Worship. ~ Gregory Heaney
