Henry Flynt

About Henry Flynt

Since the early-‘60s, hillbilly minimalist fiddler and acculturated avant-savant, Henry Flynt, has waged a multi-front war on culture that’s encompassed everything from dance, painting and concept art, to philosophical treatises on mathematics and utopian politics. An early commitment to the radical-left led him to the neo-Dada antics of the Fluxus movement, with whom he staged protests/performances that railed against the clinical modernism of the avant-garde establishment. Encounters with figures like LaMonte Young, and a growing exposure to classical Indian music and country blues, reshaped Flynt's notion of modern minimalist music--a strain he eventually dubbed “New American Ethnic Music.” Under-documented for much of his career, beginning in the early oughts, the Locust label unearthed a mountain of Flynt material, finally bringing to light the remarkable contributions of this visionary musician and thinker.
