About Cokie the Clown

Cokie the Clown is an alias of Southern California punk stalwart Fat Mike (Michael John Burkett), who is best known for his work as frontman of skatepunk outfit NOFX and owner of Fat Wreck Chords, among other enterprises. After introducing his sad clown character on a NOFX EP in 2009, he later recorded a 2019 full-length album under the Cokie moniker. Following the group's 2009 album, Coaster, NOFX issued a five-song EP of tracks from the same sessions under the title Cokie the Clown, whose cover featured a painting of Fat Mike in full creepy/sad clown guise. About five months after its release, Mike made an appearance on-stage at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, dressed in full Cokie the Clown makeup, and proceeded to play a handful of acoustic songs interspersed with a series of sad, often deeply upsetting stories from his own life, after which he showed a video of himself urinating into a half-full tequila bottle which resembled the same one he'd been passing around to the audience during his set. The disturbing performance was widely covered by the music press and even showed up on TMZ. Nine years later, Mike revived the character and recorded a full-length album as Cokie the Clown. Released in April 2019, You're Welcome continued to focus on troubled tales from the singer's past and featured contributions from blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and Dizzy Reed from Guns N' Roses, among others. ~ Timothy Monger
