Very good things happened when guitar maestro Julian Lage added the eminent Bill Frisell to his trio with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King for View With a Room. What we hear on The Layers is a kind of sketchbook EP from those sessions, with the acoustic guitar playing more of a role. “This World” is a Lage/Frisell acoustic duet, “Double Southpaw” an acoustic duet for Lage with Roeder, and “The Layers” an enchanting, country-tinged quartet number with Lage and Frisell going acoustic once again. “Everything Helps”, “Missing Voices” and “Mantra” are electric guitar pieces more in the mould of View, with intriguingly varied compositional moods and forms.
