Der ferne Klang... Orchestral Works & Songs by Franz Schreker

Franz Schreker’s reputation faded after his death in 1934, his rich, highly perfumed music almost slipping from sight. Tastes, however, have changed and he is being heard more often these days. This collection of orchestral and vocal works makes a very enticing introduction to his musical language. The “Nachtstück” interlude from his opera Der ferne Klang is cinematic in its voluptuousness, while the fabulously coloured Chamber Symphony, plus the two suites that round off this album, find him exploring larger forms. Soprano Chen Reiss and baritone Matthias Goerne make the most of the songs, bringing beauty of tone and deep sympathy, while Christoph Eschenbach is a sensitive presence on the conducting podium.
