Apple Music Home Session: Giant Rooks

“I wouldn’t say this period has changed us much as artists,” says says Finn Schwieters, guitarist of Giant Rooks. “But before the pandemic we were used to touring almost all year long and so we’ve had so much time and space for the creative process like we never had before.” That time and space allowed the German indie favourites to rework two of standout tracks from their 2020 debut album ROOKERY—and explore the possibilities of Nelly Furtado’s “All Good Things.” “It felt natural to go back to lead singles ‘Watershed’ and ‘Heat Up’ almost half a year after the release of the album and see how we could reimagine them,” Schwieters says. “For the cover version, we were looking for a song that was originally in a different sound world than you would expect from our band. So we stumbled across ‘All Good Things’, which has this very classic Timbaland R&B production. It’s been great to see that it also works with a more classic, Mazzy Star indie sound that we’ve tried to go for in our version.” And were there any surprises when stripping down their own hits? “For ‘Watershed’, it was exciting to experiment with these vocoder sounds that have made this version something special,” says Schwieters. “And on ‘Heat Up’, it was interesting to see how different it turned out. It’s the same song, but it has a different vibe.”
