Apple Music Home Session: Emeli Sandé

For Emeli Sandé, recording her debut Apple Music Home Session took her right back to her career’s earliest moments. “It was a time in music when every artist had a really distinct sound, and people were really creative with production,” she tells Apple Music. “l miss all the different flavours you could hear, I miss a lot of the bravery that used to be in music around those years, and I hope it can come back.” In this spirit—and helping to celebrate the music of the 2010s—Sandé performs a heartfelt cover of Rihanna’s “Half of Me”, taking the 2012 album cut from a soaring piano ballad to more downtempo territory backed by acoustic strings. As the singer preps her fourth studio release, Let’s Say for Instance (arriving May 2022), recording her Home Session also prompted sombre reflection. This performance of “There Isn’t Much” touches on the healing and personal adjustments experienced over the pandemic. “Now, when I approach my music, I’m thinking: ‘How will this affect people’s lives?’” the Scottish singer-songwriter says. “How can this create a space in which they can perhaps escape and heal? Whether it’s through dancing and having fun or reflecting deeper emotion—It’s something I’ve always tried to do, but the last few years have made me dig a lot deeper.”
