Stan Kenton had a wildly successful career as a bandleader during the swing era, and he maintained a healthy output later in his life; 1958's “Rendezvous at Sunset” was a warmly groovy song that gestured toward Miles Davis' cool tunes, and “Free” (from his 1974 sessions in Chicago) was tinged with free-jazz percussion grooves, explosive sax soloing and funky horn orchestration.
